I have been researching photo locations around Liverpool for my front cover of my magazine.

These are some iconic musical locations in liverpool that i may use in my photo's for my magazines.

After taking into consideration all the factors of each of the magazines I researched I have chosen to use Q as my style model. I have chosen Q as a very high circulation (this means how many copies of a particular publication is distributed). It also has a very high readership (this is an estimate of how many readers the a publication has). Another reason is that the general layout of the magazine is good as it is very readable and has a great layout of the front cover.

I have research various different magazines to use a my style model I looked at magazines such a Q, Mojo, NME, KERRANG! and many more. I took many things into account when choosing a style model such as the target audience, the layout, readability and the readership.

Here are an example of some of the magazines that I have been researching to find a suitable style model to fit into my requirements of my target audience of people aged 18-26 and people into indie pop.


Kerrang does not completely fit my target audience it is in the age range as it targets people aged 15-24 which fits into a similar age range as me but it does not target the same people as me. It targets people who are into rock music.

Mojo does not fit my target audience as it targets an older age range than what I am looking to target and also it genre of music its more classic rock and bands such as the Beatles, Radiohead and The Rolling Stones.

NME age group also does not completely fit in with my target audience as it targets people aged 15-24 year olds . But it targets people who are into music such as rock and indie where as I am looking for a magazine that targets people into indie and pop.

Q magazine fits into my target audience as it targets people aged 15-24 which fits in with my age group and also it targets and audience who are interested into pop and also indie music.

I have recently been researching to find a institution which is suitable to publish my magazine. I have chose to look at two different institutions EMAP, IPC media and BAUER media. I have chosen to not go for EMAP as it does not appeal to the music audience which is my main target audience. I also chose not to go for BAUER media as it already has a few music magazines so it will have competition. Where as I have chosen IPC media as this appeals to the music audience as it publishes the magazine NME but also are a well know institution as it publish a range of magazines.

After talking my initial shots we all regrouped in the class room to get some feed back on how my photo composition was in my first shots.

When showing my pictures on the board I had to pick out the negative aspects to my photographs while everyone else in the group had to pick out the positive point.

When other people photographs were on the board the roles were reversed they had to pick out the negative points while me and other members of the group had to pick out the positive.

This process that we used is known as Mise En Scene.

Photo Composition

This is one of the photographs that we reviewed I could improve this picture in many ways as the picture itself is poor as I could not connect this picture with a story about school. Another point is that I have not thought about things when taking the photograph such as the reflection made by the glass door. The final thing that I could approve on is the positioning off the actor as he is not addressing the audience.

This is one of the better photographs that I took as I have taken into account many things such as the lighting and the positioning of my actor as I have took into account the rule of thirds.

Preparation for my Preliminary task

After I had composed my first set of photographs we reviewed the photographs that I had taken with the rest of the group. During this i picked out the negative points to my photographs while the rest of the group had to pick out the positive points.

We also were taught about the rule of thirds which should improve the composition of my photographs.

Deciding My Brief

Last week I chose the brief that I was going top do the brief i decided to do was the print brief. 

 Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a DTP mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of the program.

Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine.

All images and text used must be original, produced by the candidate, minimum of FOUR images per candidate.

I chose to do this brief as I believe that I can achieve a good grade as the school has the resources I need to complete this task such as Adobe Photoshop, high quality cameras and course work from previous years that I can look at to help me with my course.
